Abigail says the dancing was not related to witchcraft. Reverend Hale arrives and questions Abigail about dancing in the forest. Rebecca Nurse comes in and Betty begins to quiet. Putnam says that Betty is bewitched and cannot hear the Lord’s name without pain. Parris and the Putnam's rush into the room. At the phrase, “going up to Jesus,” Betty covers her ears and becomes hysterical. When his wife, Elizabeth, found out about the affair, she fired Abigail from her work at their house. Proctor feels uneasy because he had an affair with Abigail. John Proctor shows up and goes into the room with the girls. Betty turns back to her unresponsive state. Abigail slaps Betty and orders the girls to only say that they danced in the forest and threatens to kill them if they mention anything more. Betty argues she didn’t say they drank blood in order to kill John Proctor’s wife. Betty sits up in bed and cries for her mother, who is dead.Ībigail tells the girls to relax, that she told Parris everything. Mary Warren confesses that she is scared they will be called witches. Again, Parris yells that the girls were using witchcraft.Įveryone leaves the room and the girls are all alone. She thought that someone used witchcraft to murder them, so she sent Ruth and the other girls to contact the spirits of her dead children. Putnam had 7 babies that all died during childbirth. Putnam says that their daughter, Ruth, is acting just like Betty. Thomas Putnam and his wife, Ann, enter the room. Parris yells at his niece, Abigail, because he saw her, Betty, Tituba, and the other girls, dancing in the forest in the middle of the night. Parris, who is Betty’s father, enters the room and calls Reverend Hale, who is an expert on witchcraft. It is thought that she is the victim of witchcraft.
